Hyperpigmentation Treatments

Skin Darkening Disorders, or hyperpigmentation, are a common concern in dermatology offices. While hyperpigmentation is generally harmless, skin discoloration can cause distress. This condition involves the darkening of the skin due to an excess of melanin, the skin pigment. Exposure to sunlight prompts melanocytes to produce more melanin, leading to skin darkening or tanning. Factors beyond sunlight, such as genetics, can also contribute to increased melanin in specific areas or throughout the skin. In rare cases, substances other than melanin can cause skin darkening.
Dark Spots
Dark spots or brown patches are pigmented areas that develop on the skin due to an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin coloration. The production of melanin is accelerated by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, causing certain areas of the skin to appear darker than the rest.

Postinflammatory Hyperpigmentation
Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a common acquired cutaneous disorder occurring after skin inflammation or injury. The most common causes of PIH, especially, in patients with darker skin color are acne vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, and impetigo.

Atrophic Depressed Scars
Scars vary in appearance and can be caused by accidents, burns, surgeries, acne, or illnesses. Scars develop as a natural part of the body’s healing journey. When the skin is injured, the body creates tissue to mend the damage and fill in gaps. Atrophic scars happen when the body does not make enough collagen while healing, which causes the loss of tissue. Acne, chickenpox or injuries involving loss of skin tissue are the usual causes of these scars.

Blackheads & Enlarged Pores
Impure skin appears uneven, with increased sebaceous secretion in the T-zone which becomes easily shiny. Impure skin is not necessarily oily, but often dry in the cheekbones. It has widespread blackheads that easily evolve into boils and pimples. It is sensitive skin, easily reddened and irritable, with a dull complexion.
